MARI: Texture Challenge 2012
19 September 2012 - 20 November 2012

The Foundry and CGSociety are looking for the world's best MARI artist!

The Foundry, makers of the 3D digital paint tool, MARI, has supplied us with "Witch Doctor" by the wonderful Jakob Kousholt (thanks Jakob!). The model, shown above, is for you to texture and bring to life. Download it here:
Witch_Doctor_v4.zip (10MB)

The artwork will be judged on the composition, attention to detail and general awesomeness. We want to see textures that tell a story.

We'll be looking for detailed, realistic textures in a lookdev-ready setup (a minimum of colour, bump and spec maps for each shader). Details which make the textures more evocative will get bonus points too. You will receive extra qudos for submitting animated textures, turntables, renderable scenes (Maya and 3ds Max etc.) and showcasing your work in progress on CGTalk.

The competition will be judged by Jack Greasley, MARI’s product manager, the multi-talented Scott Metzger, Image Engine’s Justin Holt and well known texture artist and CGTalk Chief moderator and host Leigh Van Der Byl.

You must have permission to distribute the textures you use.

Haven’t got MARI? Never used it before? The Foundry are offering a 60 day trial for the duration of the challenge, plenty of time to get to grips with this incredibly powerful tool. Download the 15 day trial www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/mari/, and to extend it to the end of the competition email your name, address, phone number, and sys ID for the license to mari-challenge@thefoundry.co.uk

If you want to brush up on your texture painting skills before presenting your final entry, CGWorkshops is offering an 8 week, fully mentored, online "Creature Texture Painting in Mari," CGWorkshop with Image Engine's Justin holt. The workshop begins on 15th October. Click here for more details. Remember that although you'll learn better techniques through Justin's videos, feedback and live webinar sessions, Justin cannot give you any advice or help on your competition entry.

Deliverables to be uploaded on your Challenge page:
Beauty render
At least 2 WIPS (Work In Progress), but the more the better.

Once you have agreed to the terms and conditions the join button will change to a yellow "UPLOAD ENTRY" button, allowing you to submit your WIPs and final entry.
  • Q: What are the Final Image technical requirements?

Dimensions: At least 2560 x 1600 pixels or, at least 1600 x 2560 pixels. File type/extension: High quality JPG / .jpg
  • Q: What deliverables are there for an image entry?

    Final beauty render
At least two stages of Work in Progress, which must be uploaded to the challenge pages
  • Q: Can I use other tools and software in conjunction with MARI?

We are looking for the ‘best MARI artist’ so we really want the texturing to be done using MARI!

However, if you wish to pose the model using a sculpting program that’s absolutely fine and we are also quite happy for you to make a normal map to add form to the piece.

If you wish to do any prep work in a 2D package that’s fine too.

  • Q: Is it OK if I pose/alter the model, add hair, or add additional objects to the scene?

Absolutely, but remember it’s textures we’re really excited about!
  • Q: Can I get a MARI trial extension for the challenge?

Yes. Download the 15 day trial http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/mari/, or, if you are already using a MARI 15 day trial, please email mari-challenge@thefoundry.co.uk with the details below to extend it to the end of the competition.

  • Q: Why must entrants be members of CGTalk or CGSociety?

We need to be able to contact all entrants -- we have one registration system. This also means that all competition entrants are covered by the same set of Terms and Conditions.
  • Q: Do I need a paid CGConnect membership?

Not at all! Our CGChallenges are open to all CGTalkers. If you don't already have a free account, get one here.
  • Q: Can I have multiple entries?

    Yes.
  • Q: I'm using a new email but the challenge keeps sending stuff to my old one. How do I fix that?

You go into CGTalk's UserCP (User Control Panel) and change your email address there. If you still have problems, email us.
  • Q: What if I am a winner and I want a different prize? E.g. What if I win the Grand Prize but I want the Runner Up prize instead?

You can contact the other winner with the prize that you want, and ask if they want to do an exchange. What you guys do with your prizes is up to you, and we're not going to be involved in it.
  • Q: How can I get out of this challenge?

    Just stop submitting.
  • Q: Can I upload my WIP images to my own server? Is that counted?

No. Please use the Challenge site facility to upload your Work-In-Progress. It allows us to track the entries properly, and guarantee continued hosting of all images.
  • Q: Is there a video category?

    No.
  • Q: My question wasn't answered above. What should I do?

If you have additional questions or comments, please read and post a reply to the support thread on CGTalk.
