MARI: Texture Challenge 2013
1 October 2013 - 15 December 2013

The Foundry and CG Society proudly present our 2013 MARI Challenge!

MARI is the VFX industry-standard 3D digital paint tool and we’re looking for the world’s best MARI artist. Are you up for a challenge? This year, the famous designer Harald Belker has graciously supplied us with a sci-fi hover bike. Harald’s vehicle and prop designs have appeared in countless films, including Total Recall, Oblivion and the Batmobile in Batman & Robin, Now is your opportunity to take one of Harald’s designs, modeled in MODO, texture it up and make it look amazing. Thanks also to Clément Dieu for providing the rider mesh.

The artwork will be judged on the composition, attention to detail and general awesomeness. We want to see textures that tell a story. We'll be looking for detailed, realistic textures in a lookdev-ready setup (a minimum of color, bump and spec maps for each shader). Details which make the textures more evocative will get bonus points too. You will receive extra points for submitting animated textures, turntables, renderable scenes (MODO, Maya, etc.) and showcasing your work in progress on CGTalk.

The competition will be judged by Image Engine’s Justin Holt, Scott Metzger, Jack Greasley, MARI’s Product Manager and CG Talk’s chief moderator and host Leigh van der Byl. Also, Mr. Harald Belker himself will be taking part in judging this competition.

A couple things to keep in mind:
You must have permission to distribute the textures you use.

Deliverables to be uploaded on your Challenge page:
- Beauty render
- At least 2 WIPS (Work In Progress), but the more the better.

If you're looking to refine your Mari Texture Painting skills before you submit your final entry, check out our CGWorkshop "Realistic Character Texture Painting in Mari 2.0" with Justin Holt. The workshop begins Monday 7th October and gives you the opportunity to learn from a master.
